History: Please see the "X-Men First Class, and "New Timeline: Days of Future Past" section, here.
Personality: At the most basic level, Charles Xavier is empathetic, generous and kind. At times, however, those traits got buried when he lost both his sister and his best friend, as well as his ability to walk. But to get to that point in who Charles is, we need to back up.
Even though Charles was raised with wealth and privilege, he felt for the longest time that he was alone. Then Raven Darkholme, a young shapeshifter, broke into his home to find food. He was happy to meet her: he wasn't alone and he gained a sister. While he went on to get his professorship, Raven stayed by his side, in a traditionally attractive form. When they were recruited to work with the CIA and he began training the other mutants, he found his footing as a mentor and a leader. But his good friend Erik Lehnsherr had a different view of those without mutant abilities. While Charles thought they could work with normal people, Erik did not. It came to a head during the Cuban Missile Crisis and it left Charles paralyzed from the waist down, the first blow, only made worse when Raven chose Erik over him.
From that time, he attempted to keep his school going, trying to persevere, even if he didn't have his best friend, or his sister. Then he lost his other mutant students to the Vietnam war.
After that, it was all downhill. When he had to close his school for lack of students, he began misusing Hank McCoy's serum that the scientist had used to keep his mutation "in check." The serum, when Charles used it, gave him the ability to walk again (through Movie Magic!) and muted his powers, meaning his head was quiet. He got lost in drug and alcohol abuse and rejection, feeling that Erik had stolen Raven away and they had deserted him, abandoning him. He had no reason to hope, no reason to feel anything but self-pity.
So, when Logan (Wolverine) comes back from the future to save the world from the Sentinels, he meets a Charles Xavier who was a shell of the honorable, good and sensitive man he had been and would become again.
When he is given the chance to contact Raven again and work to stop her from being instrumental in the creation of the Sentinels, it is not easy, but he stops using the serum, loses his ability to walk, and starts to rediscover himself and rebuild his relationship with his sister. It became obvious early on that he would not be rebuilding his relationship with Erik. Through a connection in Logan's mind, Charles is able to speak to his future self, being told,
And as frightening as it can be, that pain will make you stronger. If you allow yourself to feel it, embrace it, it will make you more powerful than you ever imagined. It's the greatest gift we have: to bear their pain without breaking. And it comes from the most human part of us: hope. Charles, we need you to hope again.
Ultimately, while Charles is not fully reconciled with Raven (or Erik for that matter), he does have hope in her, since she does not shoot Trask and in many ways, did not become the "evil" woman she could have become. And he knows that he needs to re-open his school and work toward a future that is not set but can be determined by team work, hope, and goodwill between mutants and humankind. He needs to believe in himself and other mutants. He has a long way to go, it's true, but he has at least started the journey.
